Carpenter Ants
Carpenter Ants do not eat the wood like Termites, but the ants do excavate in to the wood to form galleries in which they live and support the colony. Ants can affect the structural integrity of the wood because they form holes in the material into which moisture can accumulate causing more damage. Carpenter Ants have been the cause of millions of dollars of damage throughout the United States. Signs of Ant activity are finding wood shavings with insect parts mixed in and seeing live ants on the outside of your house. Ants cause damage to wood by excavating tunnels through it and not by eating it. The Queen Ant may have wings but will usually lose them after mating. A first year colony may have up to 50 worker ants and a mature colony up to several thousand individual ants. These ants will infest wood with high moisture content. Within the home, ants are often found in window sills, around door frames, in attics, and around showers, tubs and toilets. Outside ants are found in trees, stumps, landscape timbers, and under wood piles. Homeowners will have difficulty eliminating these ants due to the products available to them. Using over-the-counter residual sprays will kill the foraging worker ants but will not kill the Queen Ant or the ant nest. Our Pest Control Services will destroy the nesting colonies inside and out. Carpenter Ants are nocturnal. Carpenter Ants usually nest outside in moist wood or partially decayed wood. Carpenter Ants prefer to hollow out their nest in softened wood. It is important to understand that you can have both indoor and outdoor ant nests. Carpenter Ants construct two different kinds of nests: Parent Colonies, which when mature contains an egg laying Queen Ant, a brood and 2,000 or more worker ants or a Satellite Colony, which may have a large number of worker ants, but no Queen Ant or eggs. For example, the ants found in your home may have come from a Parent Nest outdoors or from one or more Satellite Nests hidden inside the house or outside. Large Carpenter Ant colonies can cause structural damage; the damage is not normally as serious as termite damage.
Pavement Ants
Pavement Ants, which usually make their homes in pavement, are small ants that are black-brown. Swarmer Ants, which are ants that have wings, usually appear in June or July. However, Swarmer Ants have been reported at all times of the year and are also be known as "Grease Ants" or "Sugar Ants."
